The Santa Barbara Zoo celebrates the wild creatures that call California home at the popular, annual, after-hours party Zoo-B-Que, held this year on Friday, September 11, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Zoo-B-Que “Early Bird” tickets are available until August 27 at $16 for adults, $12 for children (2-12); Zoo members get $2 off. After that date, tickets increase by $1. Tickets are sold at the Santa Barbara Zoo until September 8. No tickets are sold at the door the night of the event. For more information: call (805) 962-5339 or visit www.sbzoo.org.

Kids with Finnegan the Channel Island Fox

There will be fun for kids and adults alike with giraffe feeding, Zoo train and Carousel rides, bouncers, themed arts and crafts, and prizes. Enjoy magic by local magician Mark Collier and lively entertainment by Dancing Drum. Keepers will give talks about the animals in California Trails and the public can meet Finnegan, the Zoo’s Channel Island fox, and Wilbur, the opossum.

In recognition of the service provided by local “First Responders” to the recent Gap, Tea, Zaca, Jesusita, and La Brea fires, the public is invited to sign a number of oversized cards to be on view during the Zoo’s upcoming First Responders Week on November 16 through 22.

The theme of Zoo-B-Que this year is based on the Zoo’s newest exhibit, California Trails, a $7.5 million complex which opened last spring and features endangered and threatened California native animals including California condor, Channel Island fox, desert tortoise, bald eagle, and other raptor, amphibian and reptile species.

Zoo-B-Que is sponsored in part this year by Nett & Champion Insurance and Hub International.

Note: The Zoo will close early, at 3:30 p.m., on September 11 for Zoo-B-Que.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is indeed gorgeous! I was there a couple years ago, but I'm now anxious to get back and see their new California Trails exhibit. That Channel Island fox is a very rare creature. Allen Nyhuis, Coauthor: America's Best Zoos
