SANTA BARBARA - A kitchen fire in an upstairs apartment located at 4053 Foothill Road occurred today (11/7/09) at 2:53 pm.  The fire was caused by cooking oil used for French Fries.

Santa Barbara City Fire Engine 4 was first on scene to find heavy smoke pouring out of an upstairs apartment.

When the Fire department arrived, the found the residents, who were home when the fire started.  They told the firemen that the fire was in the kitchen.  The residents said they tried to put the fire out themselves using two fire extinguishers from their apartment complex, but the heat and flames were too much to complete the job safely.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the remaining fire and checked for any fire extension within the kitchen area and walls.

City fire officials remind everyone of the importance of having a working fire extinguisher in their home.
