Woman dies after falling off hood - driver arrested

On July 24th a long time Santa Barbara resident Isabel Tole Renosa, age 41 fell off the hood of a 1994 Mercury Marquee driven by Dennis Gibbons, age 53.  Gibbons is also a longtime Santa Barbara resident.
 
 
  

Woman alleged abuses six week old baby

19 year old Rocio Silva was arrested today on charges of felony child abuse.  She is also in jail on a no-bail immigration detainer.  The baby was taken by his parents to Goleta Valley Cottage hospital for seizures and transferred to SB Cottage hospital due to the severity.
 
  

UCSB scientist invents oil cleanup technology

UCSB environmental scientist Victoria Broje invented a new oil skimming device called the Groovy Drum Skimmer.  A recent UCSB press release noted that the "new design, which features hydrocarbon-based rubber and a drum with a triangular-grooved pattern, proved to be as much as 300 percent more efficient than previous skimmers."

DUI round up - 34 people arrested in 5 weeks

The last DUI Round-Up was released May 13th. Since then, 34 more drivers have been arrested by Santa Barbara Police Officers for DUI. Ten of these arrests stemmed from traffic collisions, many of them hit-and-run. Another 2 arrests were reported collisions where the officers could not locate what the drivers had struck.
 
  

Local firefighter gets gift of life

In August of 2008, Santa Barbara City Fire Captain Heidi Rockenbach was hit with the news that for an unknown reason her kidneys were failing, and that she would need a kidney transplant to continue her career as a firefighter. It wasn’t long before a Santa Barbara woman, Kathy Judy, who knew Captain Rockenbach from high school, came forward and offered one of her kidneys.

SBCC student struck by train, dragged in front of kids

Yesterday (5/26/10) at 5:24 p.m., police and emergency rescue personnel responded to a call of a pedestrian struck by an Amtrak passenger train near 200 State Street. The victim, tentatively identified as a 23-year-old local man, was instantly killed.

In a daring morning take-over style robbery, a man ordered all the employees and customers to the floor while he successfully robbed the Rabbobank at 2222 Bath street at 10 am.

210 gallons of crude oil and 4,200 gallons of water from a water tank that was overfilled and leaked onto the property.
 
  

Local surfer dies while surfing

The body discovered in the ocean yesterday has been identified as Gordon Alan Jennell, age 48, of Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Coroner’s office made the identification and notified his family.
 
  

Kidnap/Robbery at Las Positas mall - details emerge

The man who allegedly robbed a woman via a car jacking has been arrested, and now details are starting to emerge.  Preliminary investigation by the SBPD has the suspect as a carnival employee who stayed behind.  He also has lived for a couple of days in a horse stable at Earl Warren.

John Palminteri Injured in Rollover

John Palminteri, a reporter for KEYT was injured today at approximately 2:30 pm (4/26/2010) while on his way back from reporting a story in Santa Maria.  Apparently a tire blew out in the van he was riding in and the vehicle ended up rolling over two times.  Palminteri was injured although he was treated at the scene and released.
 
  

Quaids arrested - updated

Randy and Evi Quaid are currently being booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail after a judge ordered the couple remanded into custody during this morning's court appearance.
 
  

Four-man bike crashes in Bel Air Knolls

Four men crashed a four-man rental bike coming down the extremely steep Portesuello towards Los Positas.  The four men jumped out of the bike when it reached critical speed and when the intoxicated men determined it was too hard to stop using a hand brake.  One of the men was critically injured.
 
  

DA Christie Stanley succombs to cancer

Retired Santa Barbara County DA Christie Stanley passed away at home this morning, Sunday April 25, 2010, at the age of 61, after a long battle with lung cancer. She is survived by her husband Gary; her daughters, Renee Edman and Dawn Wright; her stepchildren, Mark Stanley, Ryan Stanley and Tami Millican; her mother, Jeanette Claycamp and her grandchildren

 
  

Man Stabbed At Hendry's Beach

A man was stabbed to death Thursday evening at Hendry's beach at about 6:30 pm.  The SB Sheriff is asking for help to identify suspects.

Eighteen people were arrested for DUI in the last two weeks.  Dead giveaway for police to suspect DUI:  Driving with headlights out; Speeding on Cliff drive whilst crossing the double yellows;  Being so drunk you are refused when you try to buy alcohol at a grocery store;  Picking up your friend from a sobering center for a ride - and being drunk;  Shearing off a fire hydrant - dead giveaway!

A fight at Wildcat, and almost a fight at Tonic.  Another guy punched a hole in a window at Dr. Hurtado's dentist office, and police just followed the blood trail, and then the puncher became so problematic he had to be strapped to a gurney.
 
  

Man jumps of Cold Spring Bridge

Just after 6 pm yesterday (3/10/2010) a 71 year old Mountain View man - suffering from terminal cancer jumped from the Cold Spring Bridge to his death.  The Santa Barbara County Fire Department found the body about 200 feet down the embankment.

A project to add eight American with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramps and new signals at the northbound and southbound on/off ramps continues at the Hwy. 101 Turnpike Road Interchange.
