Stoker Raises $100K For Campaign

Stoker raises $100k without even trying for his political campaign.  Without much of a challenger, Stoker will get the benefit of being the only serious Republican candidate while the Jordan and Williams both spend their time, money and energy focusing on beating each other up.

California Coastal Commission Draws Fire From Stoker

Citing example after example of the Coastal Commission acting in an obstructionist manner, Stoker calls for the power to be shifted back to the counties that need to get work done instead of requiring lengthy certification plans that are onerous.  Stoker the Republican candidate for 35th Assembly.

Pedro Nava Named Legislator Of The Year By PCL

Assembly member Pedro Nava has been selected as the Planning and Conservation League’s (PCL) 2009 Legislator of the Year for his efforts to fight expanded oil drilling off the California Coast and for pursuing an oil severance tax. The award is given every year to a legislator who has made an outstanding contribution to California’s environmental laws and policy–making in the previous session.

Pedro Nava's Oil Tax Remedy Is Bad Medicine

Op-Ed: Assemblyman Pedro Nava has the same remedy for every problem facing California. Indeed, regardless of the question, Pedro's answer is essentially the same, create a new tax; hike an existing tax; or make a temporary tax wider, deeper, and permanent. Nava's advice for every fiscal ill that we face is to ask all of us to pay more taxes and call him in the morning…at which point he will probably be well on his way to his next political office.

SOS California - Nava Changes Rules After Agreement

Bruce Allen, one of the founders for SOS California, says Pedro Nava's proposed oil tax is "changing the rules after companies make investments in CA energy, business will begin to look at CA like Venezuela"

Ask Stoker why he lost th at 6/19/2009 1:05:00 PM

Unfortunately Mike Stoker has a short memory. He will sell his own wife and grown children to win an election. You cannot trust him. He says what you think you want to hear, except the truth. Ask him why he has NO financial backing. No website since announcing his election. The only reason he is running after losing in 2000 for Congress is because he is bored with being a not-so-successful private sector attorney. He misses the "ego-stroking" from the Supervisor days. He will do ANYTHING to get fundraising dollars, take money from his enemies even. Voters beware. This candidate will play both sides of the fence if he knows that he will get away with it. He even writes his own press releases full of egotistical comments. STOKER FOR CONGRESS is why he should not run for ASSEMBLYMAN. Tony Strickland should have waited to endorse a better, stable candidate. Lets hope Audra Strickland does not make the same mistake. God help us all if STOKER is elected, but I think the voters will see through his self

Das Williams cares about all the residents of Santa Barbara. He has worked hard to ensure better quality of life for students, the elderly, working and poor people. Das returns phone calls and emails. He has done well in SB, and will do well in Sacramento. John Douglas

Stoker is on to nothing. I voted down all propositions as well, along with the majority of liberals, because they represented the exact wrong way to address the financial crisis. Until the Republicans are voted out of office or start voting sensibly on budgetary matters, this state is doomed.

I am excited for the 35th Assembly race. This is going to be a test to show the true colors of what direction our district wants to head. I also am excited for the SB City Council race, as a new breed of politics is ready to reform local government. CHEERS to NEW BEGINNINGS! -Justin Tevis (WWW.VOTETEVIS.COM)

Gad but you're an awful writer, Matt. Get yourself a proofreader.

Average Joe at 7/29/2009 9:56:00 AM

Amusing with the writer here saying about Pritchett that "his qualifications for city council will surprise you!" As if a lifelong Democrat like David Pritchett is somehow surprising if he knows about the nuances of city government and wants to end the runaway city budget spending? Republicans do not have a monopoly on fiscal discipline, you know.

My e-mail address is idanceandteach@yahoo.com I would like to reserve two places for the forum on health care at the double tree, Fri. Aug.21st at 7:00 pm. Thank you. Alice Larsen

steve at 8/25/2009 3:58:00 PM

Pritchett is more of the same. We need new voices willing to shake things up on the Council, candidates unbought and unbossed, Frank Hotchkiss, Michael Self and Cathie McCammon come to mind

SezMe at 8/29/2009 1:44:00 AM

Thanks for the vids; I watched them both. Regarding Storker: He explicitly states that his first priority is business. I think any politician's first priority ought to be our citizens. Secondly, I cannot count the number of times he said, "You know". If Caroline Kennedy can get the boot for the same offense, so should Mike. Finally, I notice that the interviewer asked Das about the Prop 8 hot button issue but not Mike. It was not a balanced set of interviews.

dizzy at 9/2/2009 7:46:00 AM

To the unamed person who posted the 6/19/2009 blog: I didn't start fundraising until August 1st but will easily have raised over $100,000 by the next reporting period. I do not have a website as it is not one of my top priorities but will have one up in the next month so people like you will have the opportunity to contribute to my campaign. (Actaully I haven't been that worried about a website since I try to personalize the campaign and most everyone, supporters and opposition, no my email address and communicate with me all the time.) My record as a former County Supervisor, former Majority Counsel for Congress, former Deptuty Secretary of State and former Chairman of the CA Agricultural Labor Relations Board speaks for itself and in the campaign we will definitely show with that record that I am the only candidate with "real solutions" and "proven leadership." As to your last point re endorsements, I was enthusiastically endorsed last week by the entire Assembly Republican Caucus, including Audra.

On Education: I would be surprised if Ms. Whitman had ever attended, sent her children to, or even set foot on a public school. Or gone to a school board meeting, talked with a local or state superintendent, or read Prop 98. There's no way she can understand public education at anything other than the most superficial level. This is made clear by her apparent belief that two magic bullets, school report cards and charter schools, will fix everything. If only it were so simple.

Alissa at 9/2/2009 3:30:00 PM

She makes a lot of sense. Thanks for posting.

bob at 9/2/2009 6:42:00 PM

How can Lois say she represents her district when she has a small group of supporters show up early at the church and have both the moderator and the LWV shill as independent and non-partisan----what a sham--she just will bring more discent from the populus----she cannot hide forever

Deborah Watts at 9/2/2009 9:36:00 PM

Your comment on Healthcare Reform is completely slanted to the right. The healthcare bill being proposed by President Obama and Congress is not going to "ration" health care, nor would it cause Medicare to collapse! Where do you get your information? Fox News?! It very unchristian like for you to call people how can not afford health care themselves "slackers." Where are the Christian values in that statement? Who says that someone who can't afford health care doesn't work hard? This Justin Tavis who thinks this way, is not a very generous or loving person, in my opinion, nor is it very Christian!! I will never visit your site again because you distort the actual goal of healthcare reform that President Obama has proposed. You obviously don't want health care for everyone--only those that are "good enough" to pay for it themselves. God knows you don't want anything that's Government run!! I sure hope you are NOT planning on signing up for Social Security or Medicare--both Government run plans. You really

Our State "leaders" should be utterly ashamed for the direction they've steered this State budget. People w/ disABILITIES will soon be carted away from the comfort of their own homes and placed into nursing facilities, at a much steeper cost to taxpayers. GO FIGURE! Our State "leaders" could use some education on UN mandates for people w/ disABILITIES, which state that everyone has the right to live and work "in the least restrictive environment" Nursing homes are the MOST restrictive environments. We are PEOPLE too. We merely want what's best for us: community involvement. Thank you.

Your choice of endorsements shows no defined political philosophy. I will be unsubscribing.

So bottom line is that if the tax is changed to a net revenue tax and increased to 25% you would accept it (along with the $12 million deduction)? Let's do it!

sb native at 11/11/2009 11:42:00 AM

How great that a lowly department manager can order a recount...we SURE aren't living in Afghanistan!

Francis Drouillard at 12/22/2009 7:07:00 AM

Mr. Stoker -- Those plans were rejected for a reason. They either didn't conform to the LCP or to the Coastal Act. The real problem is local officials that don't adequately enforce their own LCPs. Fix that problem and you'll have fewer projects getting denied upon appeal to the Coastal Commission. The best way to make local governments follow their own LCPs is to allow the commission to de-certify LCPs that are woefully out of date or inadequately enforced by local officials. If you're truly a conservative, start acting like one. That includes conserving our state's most precious resource -- its coastal ecosystem. Republicans need to do more than declare their like of clean air and clean water. They need to do more than say "it'll grow back." They need to do more than emphasize over-development rights over environmental protections. They need to take an active role to ensure our coast will remain healthy and accessible. Granting the CCC the power to de-certify LCPs, as recommended by the Legislative Analys

Mr. Nava, his wife, and Das have no clue how to run an oil production business, but they sure know how to run them out of the state.

CoastWatch at 2/28/2010 8:39:00 AM

To bad the Sierra Club got fooled by Nava's lying. Without Nava, we could have permanently banned oil drilling off our coast, but Nava wants to support his oil tax bill. Oh well. He's a slick operator.
